Ask the Divorced Guy!
by Dean Hughson
Title: My wife has maxed out some hidden credit cards!
Question:
If your spouse has acquired an unlimited number of credit cards solely in
her name (and perhaps unknown to you)......during a divorce settlement is
the other party obligated to assist in paying off said credit cards
(they're maxed out).
Answer:
Hmmmm....that is an interesting question. I suggest you contact Consumer
Credit Counseling Service in Los Angeles http://www.cccsla.org/ (for those
who live elsewhere do a search at http://www.yahoo.com/ for your local
Consumer Credit Counseling Service Office) and ask them that question. They
can at least tell you if those bills show up as you being responsible on
your credit history. You also need to run, not walk, to a good divorce
attorney in your community. In days past some unscrupulous attorneys have
advised parties getting ready to leave a marriage to get credit cards and
then actually charge them up to the maximum so that they can pay their
divorce bills up front. Have you talked to your wife? Are you in a divorce
or have you considered counseling? Either way you have some major problems
right now that require some outside help to resolve them.
