Title: Older Women and Men Suffer in Divorce!
Question:
I have a neighbor who is 62 years old. She had been married for 35 years and
now her husband divorced her. She is having tremendous problems. First off
she has never worked so now she must face financial problems. She does not
even know how to license her own car. Her children are all grown and live far
away. It appears to we friends that her lifestyle is going to be drastically
affected by this divorce. Who is working on the problems of divorce with older
people.
Answer:
Divorce is indeed devastating not only for the young but for our elders also.
I think that agencies indeed need to study their services and be sure they are
providing services for older men and women to adjust to life after
widowhood or
divorce. As you probably are aware, many older people lose spouses also to
death.
An organization that is working on this for women is:
Older Women's League, phone (800) TAKE OWL or (202) 783-6686 or write:
OWL
666 11th St., N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20001
The Resource Center For Older People Web Site (http://www.aoa.dhhs.gov/aoa/resource.html)
It should be noted that 1.8 million people in 1995 over 65 were divorced, 6
per cent of the older people population according to studies at
http://www.aoa.dhhs.gov/aoa/stats/profile/
The Older Women's League might be a good place to start to see what services
you can find for your neighbor. You are indeed a good neighbor for helping
them find resources.
