Ask the Divorced Guy!

Title: A Religious Problem
Question:
I'm Divorced three years, 4 year old daughter. Mother and
daughter moved to Texas to marry new husband. Ex-wife has
found the Lord and now is raising our daughter Evangelical
Christian. I am Jewish and my ex-wife was Jewish when
daughter was born. She desperately wants our daughter to go
to Christian Private School. I'm adamant that she not. I
figure she's going to be indoctrinated into that religion
but feel it is important that she not be bombarded with it
at school as well.
Thoughts?
Answer:
What does your divorce settlement say? I know that mine says that my
children will be raised Jewish....some attorneys don't do that though.
Odds are pretty good that if she is the custodial parent she has the right
to choose the school. Courts are reluctant to get involved in religious
issues. What would I do? I would be stoic.....when your daughter is older
she may be open to exploring her Jewish roots. Be sure to take her to
synagogue when she is visiting you. She will have problems in the short
term with the divided religion but eventually she will find a religion of
her own. It is a difficult process.
