Do most domestic violence incidents involve drugs or alcohol?

Alcohol is often a factor of episodes of domestic violence because intoxicated people lose inhibitions, but not all domestic violence incidents involve drugs or alcohol. In fact, drug and alcohol abuse does not cause domestic violence. Many abusers may use drug and alcohol as an excuse, and drugs or alcohol can increase the severity or duration of the domestic violence incidents.


"I hit her because I was drunk," however, is about as persuasive as "I ran over him with my car because I was drunk." Both may be true; neither is an excuse.
