Is divorce an everyday thing?

Divorce is common in the United States. An oft-quoted statistic is that almost half of all marriages end in divorce and this works out to some three million divorces a year. Seen that way, divorce is an everyday thing, but then so is death. But, as anyone who has been through a divorce can attest, it’s one thing to read or hear about divorce, and another to experience it. Even under the best conditions, divorce is a dislocating and wrenching experience.
In fact, in terms of stress, some psychologists say that a divorce is more stressful than the death of a spouse.
