Is there a licensing requirement for mediators?

Some states have set minimum requirements for mediators, but others have not. Either way a mediator has some sort of mediation training by a national organization. You do not have to be lawyer to become a family mediator, but you will find that most family mediators do or have practiced family law in the past.

Is a mediator just there to make sure that my spouse and I come to an agreement?

Yes, that is the main function of a mediator. The mediator will not render a decision; he or she will merely help you to come to a decision. If a mediator cannot help you come to a mutual agreement, he or she will suggest that you continue to arbitration or to litigation in the courtroom.
