What can a woman do to keep an abuser away from her?

The best legal tool a woman can use to keep an abuser away from her is the temporary restraining order (Temporary Restraining Order). The Temporary Restraining Order is a decree by a court that requires the perpetrator to stop abusing, or perhaps even contacting, a person. The Temporary Restraining Order stipulates that the abuser stay away from her home, her place of employment, her school, her children’s school, among other things. Under severe judicial penalties, the Temporary Restraining Order also prohibits any more acts of violence by the abuser -- be he a former husband or boyfriend.
