What happens when, out of the blue, one spouse tells the other he or she wants a divorce because the love it gone?

This sometimes happens when a man leaves his wife of many years for a younger woman. Like a bolt from the heavens, the man may say that he does not love his wife, leaving her to conclude that he somehow fell out of love overnight.

Marriages rarely, if ever, collapse overnight, particularly when the partners have been married for a long time. A marriage falls apart a little bit at a time, over a period of time. There may have been warning signs one spouse fails to see, or the other spouse may be adept at hiding his feelings.
