What if I can’t afford to send my child(ren) to college?

States and judges do not want to bankrupt anyone over child support, contrary to what you may have read or heard elsewhere. If requiring child support for a college education would pose an undue financial hardship on the paying parent, this type of support may not be granted.

Remember, however, judges generally have a different idea of what is a financial hardship than you may. If paying child support means that you can’t buy a new BMW this year, a judge would not consider this a financial hardship. If, however, it means that you would be unable to purchase the necessities of life for yourself, then a judge would take that into careful consideration.
