When would a trial separation not be appropriate?

If the couple has no intention of reconciling, then a trial separation would not be the best choice for them. Also, if the separation is intended to lead to a divorce, or is clearly leading to a divorce, then a legal separation would be the best choice. When the couple have children, a legal separation would probably be best, so that the spouses can work out the details of support, custody, and visitation.
