Our situation is this: My significant other has a child with his soon-to-be former spouse. They both had attorneys for the child support and custody portion of their separation. Legal documents were drafted, signed and submitted to the court. They were separated on 7/20/07. All that remains is for the separation agreement and divorce claim to be filed with the court. However, his attorney wants an additional $2,000 to perform this service for him. What are our options for doing it on our own? We have a signed separation agreement in hand and the divorce is uncontested. How do we make this situation permanent and legal without going bankrupt? Can we file the papers ourselves? Now? Or on 7/20/08?
My wife and I filed ourselves. We essentially got a document from the law firm, filled it out ourselves (child support, property division, etc) then submitted it to the law firm. Think it was about $350. If you are both able to negotiate everything on your own, you should be able to do the same.

Thanks so much for your reply - this can be such a confusing time and the clerk of the court I spoke to this morning was not only unhelpful, but completely rude. Just goes to show that no one is looking out for you, not even the attorneys! Thanks again.
