Question about a lawyer action?

I just wanted to know how far a lawyer can go? My husband has been going through a nasty custody batttle. My husbands exwifes attorney contacted my exhusbands attorney asking him to make a report to make us neglectful parents! I think they are just trying to get anything. Can a lawyer do that?
