How do kids feel about name change

I was wondering if anyone out there has any information on the effects of the mom changing her last name. Now, out of no where my ex wants me to change to my maiden name. When we divorced I had that option but I kept it for the kids and at the time he agreed. I have been seperated for almost 3 yrs. and divorced for 2. One child is an early teen the other to be 13 soon. Any research or advice?

Re: How do kids feel about name change

I took my maiden name back before the ink was dry on the decree. My son had no problem with it. He assumed it would happen that way anyway. He was 12. It was never an issue.

The only issue will be with your kids' friends. They will still address you with the old married name.

What if you get married again? What will you do then?

Re: How do kids feel about name change

Change your name only if that is what You want. The ex has no say in the matter. It is alot of hassle to do, since you have to change it with the banks, credit card company, driver's license, car registration, Social Security, work, insurance company...the list goes on.

I kept my former married name until I remarried. I spoke with my son, who was in his late teens and told him I would be changing my last night when I remarried. He responded back "Well, that isn't a problem for me, as I never called you Mrs XYZ, I call you Mom."

Kids can truly put it into perspective, can't they. Of course I am and would forever more be Mom, regardless of what last name I had.

It took me 3 months to get everything changed over to my new married name. I was pleased to do it, but it is a lot of work. Keep your current last name, if you were not contemplating changing it. Tell the ex to grow up and deal with it.
