Unmarried but... NEED HELP w/ custody questions!!

I moved to another state from Illinois. Left an alcholic/verbally abusive partner. I live with family now. I have the kids. He (w/his mom's help) has seen the children but, has not given nearly amply child support (less than $100). Just filled for child support in July and haven't heard back yet. Does anyone have experience w/ unmarried situations and how child custody is resolved if I was the one who left and moved to a diffrent state? Please help. I am afraid to file for custody only because of the cost. But, this visitation is out of control! And I feel guilty for thier grandmother. But, she raised a MEAN person who drinks, smokes pot and parties weekly. I know I would be awarded custody. I am just afraid of the cost factor. Thank you in advance for any input!!

Which state did you move to from Illinois and how long have you lived there ?

If you don't make that much money, you might be able to file for nothing. Just go to your court house and fill out the papers you don't have to send them in. They will let you know if you qualify.
