I am fed up with my husband's antics. I want out and asap. We have 2 kids, and I don't want him getting custody. We have been together 5 years in August and married 3 years in December. He has a constant battle with alchol, and recently fouled up in to some more serious issues. He is constantly degrading me in front of the kids and has started getting physical again. I am a SAHM. I have no problem getting a job, but I have no where for my kids and I to live. As long as I am here I won't be allowed to get a job or continue with college. MY question is are there any govt programs that may help me without having to put my kids in a shelter. I lived in the Covenant House 2003 - 2004 because of my husbands nasty habits and me being stupid and putting up with it. I don't want him getting custody or his family so I have to play this really really smart. He is in the army, and deploys back to Iraq soon. He has told me numerous times he is going to put our cars in storage and only send me $300.00 a month when he is over there. I have a two y/o and a 6 m/o. PLease if anyone has any advice let me know I am at my wits end.

I have a friend that is kind of going through the same thing. They have 3 kids and she is a SAHM. Her lawyer told her that because she is a SAHM, her stbx will have to pay their rent, utilities and a monthly allowance for groceries until she can find a job to support them, all of that plus child support. You need to talk to a lawyer and fast. What area of Texas are you from because I know a great law firm in the Weatherford area.

I was in the army and saw things similar to this. How long till he goes to Iraq????? This is what you do. First if he only sends you 300 dollars, go to his unit. They'll fix that crap really fast!!!!! They do not take to it well when a deployed married soldier doesn't take care of his family. Next, if he's in Iraq, you can live in base housing as long as you are a dependant, so basically till the divorce is final. Wait for him to leave, file the papers, get your stuff together and get out as fast as possible. One thing to keep in mind, if he's active duty, it's very unlikely he'll get to keep the kids because Texas is biased towards the mother and it's almost impossible for a single parent in the military to keep their children full time.
