Can anyone explain to me how, in a suppposedly "sane" world, an average person with no talent and who probably never made more than $10,000.00 a year before she met a highly talented man and married him, can justly be "given" an enormous percentage of his assets such as this, in a divorce??
I have now reached the point where I am TRULY ready to be beamed back up to the starship, as I have NO INTEREST AT ALL in continuing to live on a planet where reason and intelligence are obviously extinct, if they ever existed here at all!

It's sad that we live in a culture where a person who makes significantly more money then his/her significant other must first do an extensive background check on the person they want to marry and/or have a prenuptial agreement (which sometimes isn't worth the paper it was drawn up on) just so they feel quasi-safe knowing the person won't financially rape them later just because the laws are set up so they just can.

Poster case for cohabitation- not getting married. perhaps this news story can be used to get more men to stop marrying and enter into business relationships with women instead, insuring their own future security and ability to care for any kids. This is the only responsible course of action until the anti male laws change. Deadbeats will be deadbeats regarless of marraige, and responsible parents will be responsible regrdless of piece of paper.

I made the comment I did, because regardless what your response is.....there is always a ..."yeah..but"
so why bother?
It does not mean that I agree with the outcome of the case.
I just dont see the use in trying to have a discussion with someone who has tunnel vision even if you are trying to agree to a certain point.
Waste of time.

Careful. In some states cohabitation can be looked upon as "common law" marriage. Texas has such a statute.

This case is newsworthy because it's so unusual. But let's look at it like this. The man is retirement age. Let's say his retirement nestegg was $85,000 rather than 850 Million british pounds (the equivelent of nearly 2 BILLION dollars). She has his baby, a 3 year old who he probably won't be around long enough raise. Is it NOT worth the settlement of $5,000 worth of his accumulated assets (this IS the proportion of what she's getting), so that his child can be properly raised?
He married her, knowing she was a former international model and amputee whose main "work" was for charitable purposes (animal rights, landmine issues, and amputee needs... whether or not you agree with her leanings is not the issue, the fact that he married her in this status IS). She was apparently quite capable of supporting herself before she married him, but now she's got his kid to raise.
HE is not upset with this settlement, and made several responses to the press that he was supportive of her while they were vilifying her over this. She dared to displease one of the british press favorites, their great Sir Paul, and even though SHE DID NOT WANT THE DIVORCE, and HE offered her this amount, she is still being shredded.
Not that I agree that anyone needs 50 million pounds to live... but that when you are complaining about huge property awards, you need to compare apples to apples... we're talking about a man whose net worth is nearly 2 billion dollars! WHO has OFFERED about 5% of his assets to settle the divorce.
Apparently, he agrees with her choice of charity, and wants to support it. He's said so much in the past. And she has continued her contributions to charity duringtheir separation, WITH HIS SUPPORT. He chooses to prefer that seh do this rather than engage in employment where she would keep the proceeds (her entire proceeds from Dancing with the Stars) was donated to one of her charities).
I dont' necessarily agree with these charities, but apparently Sir Paul DOES. So why are you so offended? Is it just the numbers? You're not worried that this will happen to YOU, are you?
What's newsworthy about this is that it is so RARE. It is not cause to get all up in arms about how we might have to suffer similar situations in our own lives!
When you become a billionaire, marry and pro-create with a woman half your age, and then decide to dump her to raise your kid while you decline & eventually die... well... THEN you can complain about how we live in a world where billionaires might have to part with 5% of their wealth as a property settlement when they dump their trophy wives.
This is NOT "yet another" example of how put upon men are in this world.

Gigi - Have I gotten under your skin that much? Twice in one week now?
Did she contribute to his $2B networth? If so, was it worth a $125M settlement in your opinion? Forget that he is worth $2B and the $125M settlement represents a fraction of his networth, do you honestly think her contributions to the marriage warrant such an extravagant award (or reward, if you choose to look at it that way)?
