Son's wife left him after 8 years out of the blue. Then just a week before he could file for abandonment, she files. Gets restraining order etc. He got a Lawyer cause she wants 1/2 his pension (not vested yet) and 1/2 401K and now spousal support. they have no kids and was married 8 years. Is she going to get it all?
Any marital property is subject to distribution , half may be a bargain in an equitable distribution state . Alimony is always a crapshoot , has she worked during the marriage , are incomes similar ?

There are too many factors to say for sure ( ever ) if alimony is an option . It's unlikely in a marriage that's not of long term duration ( 10 years + ) but anything is possible . Sometimes it's cheaper to pay than to fight .
