Can someone answer this question? A friend of mine is divorcing her husband. She wants to change her name back to her maiden name. She has been told by friends that this will cost her money? Does anyone know if this is true? Can she start to use her maiden name before she changes it back legally? She lives in Pennsylvania.
I don't live in PA, but in MI it only costs to change your name on your driver's license and your social security card.
There is no legal fee to change back to your maiden name, however, it must be included in your divorce agreement that you are given permission to do so.

>>>>>>>>>> It's not true .
§ 704. Divorced person may resume prior name.
(a) General rule.- Any person who is divorced from the bonds of matrimony may resume any prior surname used by him or her by filing a written notice to such effect in the office of the clerk of the court in which the decree of divorce was entered, showing the caption and docket number of the proceeding in divorce.

Changing back to my maiden name was one peice of paper. I live in Pennsylvania. There was no cost for that filing with the Commonwealth or social security. Social security was easy, the form was on their site and took all of 10 minutes at the window. I got my new card a week later. There is no cost with PennDOT unless you want a new picture card which costs $10. Certified copies from the prothontary run about $40, but time and date stamped copies are gratis. These are what I sent to the utlity companies and gave to the bank to change my name there. I will change home owners and car insurance policies when it is time to renew them. To change the deed on the house will cost about $150-$200 and is not important to me right now. If I sell the house later it will be listed at closing as Jane Smith formerly know as Jane Doe.
