What happens when my husband retires in a year and will only be getting retirement pay until he finds another job? Will finance automatically make the adjustment or do we need to go back to court once his retired pay starts coming in? How long will the process take? We worry that the present child support order will consume all his monthly income.

There is a very good chance that your husband's child support won't be lowered. Early retirement is considered voluntary.
And any adjustment to child support requires one to file for modification. It isn't done automatically.
