Does anyone know anything about the do-it-yourself divorce? I've heard of a few people doing it, filling out the papers from Staples or the internet and they just have to pay for the filing and court fees. We have two kids, have been married 8 years, and have agreed on pretty much everything. I get the house and my car, he gets his car. We don't have any money to split or anything like that. I just feel like it's a waste to spend thousands of dollars on something we can probably take care of ourselves. Any advice?

That's what we are doing now. Fairly easy. We got the forms from a local law firm. Hardest part is the additional paperwork we need to submit for our 401k and Pension plans.

I thought I was reading something my wife posted, 8yrs, 2 kids, etc. etc. same thing. We actually still live together but would like the divorce to be over fast. We get along ok so it won't be an ugly situation. I heard that you can just agree on the date you separated and that's all the proof of the 1yr thing you need. Is this true? and so you can get these forms from like staples, etc. and not have to pay the lawyers? That would be great, think were going shopping tonight.

I hadn't heard that you could just "agree" on the date of seperation. If your agreement is untrue I would think that this would be lying to the court and would be perjury. Where did you hear this?

I used to work for a firm/clinic that did low cost uncontested divorces and bankruptcies. This was a while ago, but I believe it was 150.00 plus a 75.00 filing fee. Everything was done by the office and even included an appt and a court appearance by an attorney. 150 wasn't much for representation and a piece of mind.
