Divorce--How much does it cost and how long did it take? I know the answer will vary widely depending on the circumstances but I just wanted to get a feel for the range...

It's hard to say how much it will cost or how long it will take. When I took the parenting class (required if you have minors), they stated that it took around a year. If both parties agree without fighting over everything, then it could be done with little cost and in less than a year.

My divorce cost me around $12K and took a little less than a year. The reason why it cost me so much is because my ex decided to fight at the last minute. And the reason why it took less than a year is because he and his attorney pissed the judge off. We settled a couple of weeks before the trial (which the judge clearly stated was not going to be adjourned for any reason), which saved money. A trial would have added another $10K onto my legal fees. I don't know how much my ex paid, but I do know that it was at least $5K, which is what the retainer was. It was probably more than that.

New Jersey is a mandatory mediation state (unless you piss the judge off like my ex and his attorney did), this usually saves you money if the two of you can reach an agreement.

My recommendation, interview several attorney's and don't pick one that is fresh out of college. Oh, and don't piss the judge off. That is never a good idea.

9 mos for it to be final, a year for property to get settled. he continues to take me back for various annoying things that seem to require an attorney - pricetag running close to $20K
