my atty asked for 1800 up front. But thing is i'm taking that out of a joint visa (of course i understand that is solely my debt) and i'm pretty sure after i tell my wife what i did she wont be happy and will probably freeze the visa.

so i was thinking of taking 2000 or 2500 out and giving that to the atty. But i worry the atty may see that as a licence to spend my money

and i dont want to pocket the money for expenses for the house because wouldnt my wife be able to claim 1/2 that excess that i spent on the atty?

well i made my decision...gave the atty the 1800 she asked for...then will tell my wife about it and tell her as soon as the house is refied out i'll pay it back.
