My mother is getting divorced from her husband of 17 years. He worked for United for 35 years, and retired a couple of year ago. As a retired employee, he and his spouse are entitled to standby travel, and a number of buddy passes". Any suggestions on how to handle this. 1 side says she is entitled to a number of buddy passes, about 50%, since he earned them through his employment. another side is that she has enjoyed flight benefits, and no longer does - the value of that lost benefit would entitle her to all of the buddy passes.
It is my understanding that each employee gets a certain number of "segments" of travel a year. I believe that number is 24, which is equivelent to 12 round trip direct nonstop flights per year. They do not accumulate from year to year, so they cannot build up excess segments. I believe that only the employee can fly for free, all other family memebers flying on those passes still have to pay a reduced cost to fly on the flights. I would think that she would not be entitled to those passes.
