Cell phones?

How do you all feel about cell phones for kids? My daughter is a very responsible 7 year old who would like to be able to be in touch with me, through texting, etc, when she's with her father.

I'm leaning towards getting her one but wanted to know what everyone thought.

Also, if you have any recommendations...I was thinking about looking for one with GPS.

checkout kajeet. It's a service designed specifically for kids. you can program the service to only accept or call certain numbers. I think it has a GPS locator (extra cost). There is no "plan signup" for a year or two. It's a pay as you go service.

I'm considering getting one for my 6yo son since if/when he visits his dad - ever - he will be 10 hours away and I want him to be able to contact me whenever he needs to. Not at his father's discretion. Plus, he'll be able to call his dad whenever he wants (not just when his dad decides to call him once every 2 weeks)

I've got two of sprint phones for two eight year old girls I got last xmas. GPS and call restrictions. I have know the gps to be off by a mile. The girls handle them just fine. I like the gps because I can find the phone if they get lost.
