Someone told me that if you are married over 10 years that a wife can get half of her husband's social security payments. Does anyone know if that's true?

There are certain stipulations to collect on a former spouse’s SS. If at the time of eligibility she is unmarried, then yes, but it will not affect the amount of SS benefits that you are eligible to receive. If she has paid more into the system than you have then it wouldn’t benefit her to claim under your SS. Again, whatever she does this should not interfere with the amount that you are due to receive in your golden years.

an ex is also entitled to any amount of retirement paid in during the marriage. check with your lawyer, legal aid, or pro se coordinator. i'm still learning about this one and it's a slow process, but i don't think it matters if you remarry. go to your law library. this site might help, but i'm not sure (haven't had time to venture here yet) http://www.leg.state.fl.us/Statutes/index.cfm
