My wife went to the courthouse and got papers for our divorce, which I dont mind but here is my problem. I went back to school to finish my nursing degree and will be finally done in may09, I told her I would be happy to sign them when I finish school because of insurances and loss of income while in school. The military pays me about 900 a month while in school so she is the bread winner right now, which I was until I got in the program. We have a 4 year old son which she said she wants custody over. Can she make me sign the papers now, she said she is going to get a lawyer and he will make me sign them? She also states that I will have to pay the lawyer fees, which I think is impossible because of my lack of income. How much time do you think I have before I have to sign them, can I prolong this until may 2009?

Yes, it is not difficult to stall for 8 months. You might want to get some professional advice so as to avoid committing any serious legal faux pas in the process.

It is not clear why you want to wait. Is it just too much to deal with now or do you feel something turns in your favor once you're done with school?

It is usually the breadwinner who has the most to loose financially in divorce.
