I was a widow w/3 kids, receiving Social Security & VA benefits monthly, including GI Bill for ME to go to college, which I was doing, as well as working part time. Remarried and had to forfeit all VA benefits,(no more free college). At the time of my marriage, I was a retail manager, and was managing the highest volume store the corporation had in OK. Within 3 months I became pregnant, quit my job, and have not worked since(20 years). We had 3 kids together in addition to the 3 I had. After 3 yrs of marriage my husband quit his job and attended school full time to earn his Master's Degree in business. He was given a part time job at the school as a graduate assistant which paid roughly $1000 a month. He was able to do this because I still received a substantial sum monthly from social security for the children of my 1st marriage. Since completing that degree, he has steadily climbed the career/income ladder in the Information Technology field. He worked many weeks 60-80 hours, and at one point spent as much as 2-3 weeks of the month on business trips. He was able to devote this time and energy to building his career because I was willing to be a full time wife and mother. He now earns about $100,000 a year, and wants a divorce because he doesn't know who he is???? I have been told that I am only entitled to receive spousal support for a period of approximately 3 years and during that time I am to figure out what/how to make a living and support myself.I am 52 years old, and find it hard to believe that after 20 years of marriage and contributing to his career and education I am only entitled to 3 years support and am expected at a time in my life when I should be approaching retirement, to either begin a new career, or settle for whatever minimum wage job I might be able to get. Once I lost my GI Bill benefits, I did not complete my college degree. The company I worked in Management for 20 years ago, has since instituted a policy that it's managers must have a college degree, so I could not even fall back to that career if I wanted to. I have been doing some research online and have found that there is such a thing as permanent alimony. Anyone in the great state of Oklahoma know anything about all this stuff? Comments, suggestions, advice on the subject are all welcome. I have really no local friends to discuss any of this with. HELP!! Thanks!
