Assets and Debts

I have a feeling my husband wants to take everything - just from what he is saying. My lawyer says that any assets accumulated during the marriage "by law" must be split equally between both and also debts. When it's all said and done my settlement if splitting half would be around 30,000. Can my husband really try and not give me a nickle? He was saying something like "I'll give you 10,000." My lawyer said it's not his money to give or mine it's ours.

Thoughts?
