How to get a functioning brain?

So here's the problem I'm trying to figure out.

I'm finding out that divorce takes a long time. There are long periods where one doesn't hear anything, and during those times my brain is calm, thoughtful and in good working order. Then there are times of furious activity. Here's the help I need.

When I receive a paper, an exception, a rebuttal - I don't even know all the legal words, my brain simply shuts down. My knees get weak, I am thrown into unproductive hyper-activity, my mouth goes dry, I feel nauseous, everything except my brain seems to work overtime.

Has anyone else experienced this? Just when I need to think the most clearly, I can't even think at all. It worries me that if I have to go to court, this will probably happen and all the judge will see is a spluttering female with strange tics in her mouth.

Any advice?
