Is the car being financed? If so, who's name is on the loan? If it is his name on the loan papers, he had to promise in writing to maintain insurance on the vehicle or the lender will obtain insurance and charge it to him. That being said, in CA, separated spouses are not required to pay for the other spouse's bills unless ordered by the court to do so. And in CA, you are separated when one moves out or away. There is no need to file anything unless you wish to proceed with a divorce or you want the court to order temporary support. When my ex and I split, I had a hell of a time getting her to pay her bills, like auto insurance. And the insurance co. wouldn't cancel her policy until I changed ins. carriers and dropped them. So I find it odd that he could easily cancel the insurance on "your" car. Anyway, if he did, the insurance company is going to notify the lender and the lender will get insurance and charge it to whom ever's signature is on the loan. If it's not financed, then if it is not insured, I suggest getting auto insurance asap. It's the law in CA. but the registered owner is typically the one responsible for obtaining it.
