The Spousal Support Handbook The Spousal Support Handbook ($28.99)
Unlike child support, spousal support is often very difficult (if not impossible) to modify after the divorce is final, so getting it right the first time is a must!

Hi All,

I have a question in regards to spousal support in Texas. My son and his wife have been married for 4 years, have one son, and absolutely nothing else. No car, no house, very little debt ($500 hospital bill), and limited assests - a little bit of furniture. They lived with me for the first part of their marriage until their little boy was born and they have lived in her parent's home for the rest of the time - paid $0 to me and pay utilities only now. She was to go to work after the baby was 6 mos. old - she didn't, my son gave her deadline - it passed, and now they're splitting. She has a degree - he doesn't. She wants a job that she is happy with and doesn't want to "take just anything". My son only wants to see his son the standard visitation - 1st, 3rd, and 5th weekends of the month, alternate holidays - she can have all the furniture. He has no problem with the 20% child suppport - but the idea of spousal support really bothers him.

What can he expect to pay and for how long? Thanks so much for any advice any of you can give him.
