Child custody during the divorce

I have temporary custody of my son during the divorce. The STBX wife has visitation every other weekend. I have been told and wanted to ask here from those that might know more about it. The the person who has custody during the divorce will more than likely be able to continue to keep custody after the divorce is final. I am the one that is working and has insurance on my son dental and health. She quit her job and walked out on me. I want whats best for my son and don't see how she can do much since she quit her job and moved 300 miles away. Can anyone shed some light on this for me.
