When determining spousal support, are earning capacity and occupation the same?

No. You or your spouse may have been a high level stockbroker, for example, but you or your spouse quit to stay home with your young children. In this case you or your spouse’s occupation technically is "homemaker" or perhaps "caregiver," but you or your spouse’s earning capacity is much higher than other homemakers, since it is assumed that you or your spouse could return to being a stockbroker.
